Thou shalt dress appropriately for both work and play. Different events and different places require different styles of dress. If you are like most people, your workplace requires a dress code that is very different from what you wear to go out with your friends or a girlfriend. Although it’s good to have accessories in your closet — such as belts — that could be dressed either up or down, for the most part your play clothes should be kept separate from your work clothes, and vice versa.
Folk wisdom claims that beauty is only skin deep. While that may be true, it is also true that your appearance sends a message about who you are as a person. Just as poor personal hygiene is often associated with laziness, and green hair and body piercings indicate angst and rebellion, how you dress gives a certain impression as well.
There are many occasions in a man’s life where he is expected to wear business attire – including, most notably, a tie. It is always the younger generation’s claim that wearing a tie is for conformists, but is it really? Wearing a tie is about sending a message – hopefully a different message than body odor or obscene piercings.
Ask ten different people for their opinions on novelty ties, and you are likely to get ten different answers. Some people love novelty ties, while others wouldn’t be caught dead in one. However, while wearing a novelty tie is a personal choice, wearing it with style is an art form.
