Silk ties are generally considered the nicest ties you can buy. Unfortunately, they are also more expensive. Silk is a natural material harvested from silkworms’ cocoons and used to make fabric. The silk fabrics men’s ties are made from may be smooth and luxurious, or woven for a richer, thicker, textured look. Besides the cost, the biggest cost is the care silk ties require — they are easily stained and soiled, and must be dry cleaned and professionally pressed.

If you shop for ties with classic designs, you’ll face less risk of them going out of style, but changes in width or popular color schemes can still make last year’s tie inappropriate for this year’s special occasion.
